Marvel Studios Whedon Makes His Marvel Through 2015 written by Sean Gerber August 8, 2012 After Disney CEO and Chairman Bob Iger announced Joss Whedon’s return to helm a sequel to “The Avengers,” the studio released a statement to Hitflix with more details on the director’s role at Marvel Studios. “Joss Whedon has signed an exclusive deal with Marvel Studios for film and television through the end of June 2015. As part of that deal, Whedon will write and direct Marvel’s The Avengers 2 as well as help develop a new live action series for Marvel Television at ABC. He will also contribute creatively to the next phase of Marvel’s cinematic universe.” Marvel has previously been content to play musical chairs with its directors, but $1.5 billion tends to change things. Bringing Whedon back was an essential piece in keeping the Marvel momentum at full force and having him develop a television series is an added bonus. Concerns over the lack of directorial experience for some “Phase 2” films (“Thor: The Dark World” and “Captain America: The Winter Soldier”) may be alleviated now that Whedon is around for guidance. There is a risk of too much outside interference preventing the solo films from truly embracing the individuality their respective characters, but the reward of a complete, cohesive build to another team up film under the wisdom of Whedon might be too good to pass up. Whedon’s supervision should ensure that the Phase 2 films will cohere and creatively lead into Avengers 2. DC … at least take notes, because goodness knows that you have free time on your hands.
