Guardians of the Galaxy Vin Diesel to Meet with Marvel written by Sean Gerber June 26, 2013 On his official Facebook page, actor Vin Diesel told his fans, “Marvel has requested a meeting… no idea what for… haha, you probably know better than me…” Given the level of success to which Diesel has helped propel the “Fast and Furious” franchise, it’s not all that surprising to hear Marvel is considering doing business with him. The obvious question on fans’ minds is which character Diesel might be tapped to play. There are a few untitled Phase Three Marvel projects scheduled for 2016 and 2017, but there are still possibilities within Phase Two of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. “Guardians of the Galaxy” is still early enough into its production to bolster its impressive cast while “The Avengers 2” is ramping up for principal photography in the first half of 2014. Based on his physique, it’s easy to imagine Diesel as Thanos, provided Benecio Del Toro, whose “GoTG” role has not been announced, is not already playing the character. Regardless of the role, Diesel would be a very big signee for Marvel. The anticipation in Hall H is going to be even crazier than normal at San Diego Comic Con next month. (Has everyone seen this instructional break-dancing video he was featured in as a teen?) And the guy has a MASSIVE built-in audience from the FAST & FURIOUS flicks. The numbers don’t lie: 43,721,084 likes on Facebook. Whoa. I highly recommended seeking out MULTI-FACIAL, a short film he wrote, directed, starred in, and even provided music for back in 1995. It’s about his own struggles as an aspiring actor who gets turned away from auditions for all the wrong reasons. His skin’s too dark for this role, too light for that role, etc. He delivers a showstopper of a monologue at the end, and the short film was so good that Steven Spielberg wrote a character into SAVING PRIVATE RYAN for him after seeing it. Marvel’s on a role, and Sean’s right: SDCC hasn’t even happened yet, and Marvel’s already winning it with ease. Your move, DC! COME ON! Michael Lalaian Am I the only one who got this sinking feeling that he might be replacing Dave Bautista? GotG just began shooting this or last week, he might be a last minute replacement if they think he can bring in a bigger audience or if Bautista isn’t working out. I really, really hope not, and most likely that isn’t the case, but that was just my initial reaction. Sean Gerber Bautista’s been in London prepping all month and shooting supposedly already started 2 days ago. I think Marvel wants Diesel for something bigger than Drax. Michael Lalaian Phew, good. I’ve been backing Bautista ever since others have been doubting him. However, I disagree that they want him for something “bigger” than Drax, since I think that kind of role would be right in his wheelhouse. He’s been a leading man for a while, but even putting him in a prominent supporting role would broaden the reach of whatever film he’d be appearing in. For example, I could see him being Gorgon in The Inhumans if that project is moving forward now. Stock To me, he looks like Absorbing Man, who I think was an IM, Hulk, and Avengers villain. But that’s a 3rd rater, so I doubt it. Maybe he’s a fit for some newer character. If X-Men is in the mix—Apocalypse? Michael Lalaian Diesel opposite Ruffalo as Absorbing Man in a solo Hulk movie could be interesting. Despite being a very strong, muscular guy, it’s actually hard to peg a role for him in a comic book movie. They could surprise everyone and caste him as Luke Cage. That may actually be a very smart move because it would be a tough film to sell to a mainstream without a big name like Diesel attached to it, and he is part African American. We’ll have to wait and see. Stock Well, I’ve never been too impressed with his acting chops. I think his best acting was his death scene in Saving Private Ryan. Since then, it seems he’s taking the John Wayne avenue, as in, “I’m gonna play myself. You guys write a script so I can do that.” Not really fair to Wayne. He was a better actor than he gets credit for. But I think the Rock puts a lot more effort into his acting than Diesel do. As for Luke Cage-Diesel may be part black, but he looks Italian to me, and I’m sure Cage’s foreseeable fans will want him to be authentically African American, all apologies to anyone who feels parts should be filled by the best actor without relevance accorded to the color of their skin. I agree, but hell, I’m part Italian, and I don’t look anything like Luke Cage.
