Guardians of the Galaxy ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Is Shaping Up Nicely … written by John Bierly July 9, 2013 … and many followers of Marvel’s space-faring adventure team were shocked on Sunday to see that one of the film’s better shapes belongs to actor Chris Pratt, who was cast as Star Lord himself, Peter Quill, in early February. Some who only knew him as bumbler with a heart of gold Andy Dwyer on NBC’s “Parks and Recreation” initially expressed a bit of dismay; “Pratt’s too fat” was blasted across more than one message board in one of the most unfortunate displays of shallow superficiality since Zack Snyder dared to cast one of the most talented actors on the planet as Perry White. But those of us who love Pratt’s work on “Parks and Rec” were well aware of the actor’s absolute dedication to physicality when it comes not just to comedy but any role. Just as he packed on the pounds to play Andy, he lost a lot of them for “Zero Dark Thirty,” only to put about 60 back on for a role opposite Vince Vaughn in “Delivery Man.” Christian Bale would be proud. Popular Hollywood photo site Just Jared provides a pretty good visual timeline for Pratt’s body mass acrobatics. Here he is on January 29, just days before Marvel’s announcement … … and then, looking a little leaner on February 23, with wife Anna Faris … … before showing some major trimming and bulking up by May 5: Any remaining doubters were silenced by that famous Sunday Instagram post by Pratt himself (whose PrattPrattPratt handle is the same as his Twitter) with the caption, “Six months no beer. #GOTG Kinda douchey to post this but my brother made me.” See for yourself: That looks pretty damn super-heroic to me, with Pratt obviously committing himself to the same kind of discipline that drove Chris Hemsworth and Chris Evans to Thor and Captain America proportions. In other ‘Guardians’ news, Simon Brew over at Den of Geek says he can confirm the roles attached to previously cast actors Benicio Del Toro, Lee Pace, and Karen Gillan. The site says Del Toro is playing The Collector, and that Pace, who’s had a good run since the abrupt cancellation of “Pushing Daisies” with roles in Spielberg’s “Lincoln” and Peter Jackson’s “Hobbit” films (and who was once in contention to play Star Lord before Pratt came out of nowhere and nabbed it) will don the emerald cloak of Ronan the Accuser. Gillan, previously named as the film’s lead female villain by The Hollywood Reporter, will play Nebula according to Brew’s source. Throw in the previously announced Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Dave Bautista as Drax the Destroyer, and supporting players Glenn Close (as the leader of the Nova Corps), John C. Reilly (as Nova Prime Rhomann Dey), and Michael Rooker (as Yondu) and you’ve got a cast that’s ready to shake the pillars of heaven. The biggest piece currently missing is casting the voice of Rocket Raccoon. Judging by Marvel’s recent casting coups, expect a huge name to land the gig. James Gunn, seen here with a live raccoon, directs the film that arrives in a theater near you on August 1, 2014. Meanwhile, if you’re not watching “Parks and Recreation,” check it out. The good folks at Warming Glow compiled a list of the 10 best GIFs of Pratt as Andy, and they’re hilarious. ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Is Shaping Up Nicely … was last modified: February 22nd, 2016 by John Bierly Related Guardians of the Galaxy 9 comments 0 Facebook Twitter Google + Pinterest John Bierly previous post ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ Teaser Poster next post New ‘Captain America’ Concept Art You may also like First Look: GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Blu-Ray... August 8, 2014 Juke Early Being the eclectic/desperate for qual entertainment geek geezer, I knew Pratt was something special from his work in TV’s sappy EVERWOOD. When he popped up from Rashida Jones couch in PARKS & REC, I felt confirmed. Kick ass Chris, guard on. . .. John Bierly I’d give my life to pop up from Rashida Jones’s couch. Just once. (Before Amy Adams was cast as Lois, Rashida was one of my favorite dream picks for the role.) Michael Lalaian Thanks for conflicting my loins, John. Thanks a lot. Stock Del Toro as the Collector? Not exactly one of those bombastic, exciting characters if I remember right. Remember him from Contest of Champions series? Didn’t think so. But maybe he’s been retooled to be something other than an old man who collects people. Does this mean we may see The Watcher? Michael Lalaian Obviously we’ll have to wait and see how The Collector is portrayed in this film, but personally I would have preferred him playing Adam Warlock, if only because I’d rather see Adam Warlock introduced into the Marvel Cinematic Universe before The Collector. Stock Agreed. I am disappointed. Warlock fits Del Toro like a glove. The Collector? In a kind of spaced out meta-physics acid trip, he might be interesting, but I think its a wasted opportunity. I’d rather see the Watcher myself. Comikaze Actually for a comic character to reach the mainstream conciseness it usually takes a good TV/Movie creative team and a talented actor to make an impact depending on how much of a role he has in the film and of course how impressive he is in the scenes of the movie. Before Batman :The animated series, Mr Freeze was never considered as being one of the great Rouges gallery that batman boast until Paul Dini and Bruce Timm got their hands on the character and totally made him a villian of some actual worth. Stock Mr. Freeze showed up quite frequently in the 66 series. 3 different actors played him, all of well established credentials, and the show was only on 3 years. They probably used him 10 times. Stock Shallow superficiality is the way of the world. But you know, Fat Andy ain’t gonna work. And Jackie Cooper still rules as Perry White.
