BatmanSuperman Zack Snyder Confirms ‘Man of Steel’ Sequel Featuring Batman! written by Sean Gerber July 20, 2013 “Man of Steel” director Zack Snyder just announced to the rabid masses inside Hall H at San Diego Comic Con that his Superman film is getting a sequel. Then, Snyder teased the crowd before revealing a Superman/Batman logo (above) to confirm The Dark Knight will indeed appear in the film, as reported by the LA Times earlier today. Fans, you are now free to rejoice. There was no confirmation, however, of films for The Flash in 2016 or Justice League in 2017, so we’ll have to keep an eye out for those. I’ll have plenty more to say about this so keep checking back with MMM! UPDATE: The official press release from Warner Bros. has been posted below. Notice that the “new” Batman has not been cast. Snyder also describes the role as “our new Batman.” It’s not enough to kill desperate speculation, but Christian Bale is out, ladies and gentlemen. Do not expect to see him wearing a cape and cowl alongside Henry Cavill’s Superman. It is also worth noting Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas are not producing this new film, instead returning as presumably less involved executive producers. BURBANK, CA, July 20, 2013 – On the heels of the worldwide success of “Man of Steel,” director Zack Snyder is bringing together the two greatest Super Heroes of all time—Batman and Superman—for the first time on the big screen. The announcement was made today by Greg Silverman, President, Creative Development and Worldwide Production, and Sue Kroll, President, Worldwide Marketing and International Distribution,Warner Bros. Pictures. The current hit, “Man of Steel,” has taken in more than $630 million at the worldwide box office to date, and climbing. Along with its star, Henry Cavill, the upcoming film brings back Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne and Diane Lane. The new Batman has yet to be cast. Snyder is co-writing the story with David S. Goyer, who will then pen the screenplay. Production is expected to begin in 2014, with an anticipated release date in Summer 2015. Silverman stated, “Zack Snyder is an incredibly talented filmmaker, but beyond that, he’s a fan first and he utterly gets this genre. We could not think of anyone better suited to the task of bringing these iconic Super Heroes to the screen in his own way.” Kroll added, “We are thrilled to be back in business with Zack and his team on this next movie. The success of ‘Man of Steel’ is a wonderful testament to the love and support that both fans and new audiences, worldwide, have for these characters. We are very excited to see what Zack has in store for all of us.” Diane Nelson, President, DC Entertainment, noted, “Superman and Batman together on the big screen is a dream come true for DC fans everywhere. All of us at DC Entertainment could not be more excited for Zack’s continuing vision for the DC Universe.” Zack Snyder, who made a surprise appearance at Comic-Con today, breaking the news to audiences there, later said, “I’m so excited to begin working again with Henry Cavill in the world we created, and I can’t wait to expand the DC Universe in this next chapter. Let’s face it, it’s beyond mythological to have Superman and our new Batman facing off, since they are the greatest Super Heroes in the world.” The new film brings back Charles Roven and Deborah Snyder as producers. This time, Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas are serving as executive producers, along with Benjamin Melniker and Michael E. Uslan. Thomas offered, “Whilst our ‘Dark Knight’ trilogy is complete, we have every confidence that Zack’s fresh interpretation will take the character in a new and exciting direction. His vision for Superman opened the door to a whole new universe and we can’t wait to see what Zack does with these characters.” The film is based on Superman characters created by Jerry Siegel & Joe Shuster, and Batman characters created by Bob Kane, published by DC Entertainment Zack Snyder Confirms ‘Man of Steel’ Sequel Featuring Batman! was last modified: February 21st, 2016 by Sean Gerber Related Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice 41 comments 0 Facebook Twitter Google + Pinterest Sean Gerber Sean Gerber is the founder and editor-in-chief of Modern Myth Media. Wasn’t expecting such an obvious symbol, but very excited Adrian Personally, I’m hoping that’s not the symbol they go with. The Batman symbol itself just looks … weird. I don’t know. I don’t like it. Adrian I’m … indifferent. If it’s true that they want to get it out in 2015 as I’ve read elsewhere then I think that’s too soon. I also think that Batman deserves his own film first. Personally, I’m glad WB/DC has announced something but after Man of Steel I’m really not feeling Goyer and Snyder tackling a World’s Finest. John Bierly And so begins the staggering terror of waiting to see who’s cast as Batman. Please, please, please choose someone good. I’ll continue to nominate Bale, of course, though the spanky new symbol up there seems to suggest an entirely new Batman, which i should expect, obviously, but you never know. Money talks, and I still say Superman + Bale Batman = Easiest Billion Ever. Adrian Bale was okay but I’m happy that the Nolan trilogy is done. I know money talks but I get the feeling that Bale just isn’t interested. Plus, I’m not sure if he’d want to work with Snyder. Nolan isn’t coming back and that is what would make Bale interested. T.T. So Zack Snyder is basically at the helm of the DC film world? I can’t understand how a guy who’s never made anything but mediocre knock off movies keeps gaining more and more clout in Hollywood Adrian Because WB/DC has no imagination and their film with him (Man of Steel) is going to make around 700 mil, leaving out the actual quality of the film. Charlie I don’t think Snyder is the head of anything. This has WB’s greedy hands all over it. He’s just along for the ride it would seem. T.T. ha-ha! ok, well? that’s not very reassuring then is it? Charlie I understand I’m probably going to come off like a whiny fanboy right now, but this is an absolute load of garbage. I understand a World’s Finest or Justice League film are inevitable and honestly, I wouldn’t mind seeing them at some point WHEN THE TIME IS RIGHT! Seriously, Superman can’t get his own sequel first before shoving Batman and the rest of the JL down our throats? This is absolutely WB taking over the reins and only thinking about the money instead of what’s best for Superman and the rest of the DCU. All the talk coming from Snyder and Cavill or Goyer has been they wanted Superman to get his own sequel first and wait for the team-up stuff later. I could not be any more disappointed then I am right now. Adrian I’m not sure I’m on your same level of disappointment but I do agree that this is all too soon. It comes off as reaching and poorly planned, to me. I’m of the mind that Batman should have his own film first. He’s a character that is well deserving of his own reboot and such. We’ll see. Darren James Seeley While I can sort of see where Wayne/ Bats could fit in to a Supey sequel, I never thought it would actually happen. Also, from now on, I will be more careful as to what I wish for. I feel your skepticism Bob Marshall Love it, just hope they don’t make Superman look a chump like they have too many times in animation and the comics Naes I can’t wait for their first encounter. Batman will hit Superman with a Batarang and Superman will then annihilate an entire city for 45 minutes and kill 100,000 people. They’re like the original odd couple! Adrian Not to mention the property damage! Guest Shocked to see all the negativity on here. As a fan who has loved these characters since before I can remember and someone who loved Man of Steel, I am BEYOND excited. I always thought it would be Lex taking Clark to task over his role in the destruction caused to Metropolis. Looks like Bruce might have something to say, though…. pud333 It’s just about timing and preference. I just preferred Superman to get a second film on his own. Bob Marshall Will there be a podcast guys? Just have to say my top choice for Batman is Rob Kasinsky. Also I think this film makes so much sense, yes I wanted another solo Superman but WBs can’t afford to hold back anymore, they need a huge hit to really kick off the DCU. Nothing is bigger than these two teaming up in the world of comics. etourist It does make sense so long as Batman comes in as an established superhero. If they’re going in with that whole angle of Batman being the only person to have bested Superman then it just wouldn’t be credible to have a ‘year one’ Batman be that person. If we really need to inform people of Batman’s origin let it be done briefly in exposition. Man of Steel’s final confrontation happened over a day, so it kind of makes sense that an established Batman didn’t have enough time to formulate any kind of response except in Gotham. However with time to study Superman he could be the person Earth turns to, to test how trustworthy Superman actually is. Just hope they don’t follow Frank Miller’s Dark Knight Returns too closely and Zack and David bring more of their own ideas into it. Rod Reading all these comments really made me realize, that we as fans don’t deserve anything anymore… All most people do here is complain, b*tch and moan… When we should be excited about what this project could be. If you don’t care about the movie simply do go watch it when it comes out. Just stop being so damn sour and negative. Charlie You do understand that no one involved with MOS wanted to go this direction, right? I’ve seen multiple interviews with Cavill and Snyder talking about the possibility of a World’s Finest or JL and they both were hopeful that it would be a while before we got to any type of team-up. They clearly wanted another solo Superman film before something like this. If I didn’t think this was WB hi-jacking the franchise and just seeing dollar signs I might be happy and not “so damn sour and negative”, but I really don’t see how anyone could say that isn’t the case. Rod If Zack didn’t want to do it I think he would have just simply said no thanks I don’t want to direct this, he does have pull within the WB. So yes people are being negative and damn sour…. Let it happen… If it sucks then it sucks… But if its good then it’ll be good. Look I agree I would have liked a another solo Superman film but maybe just maybe they have a plan in mind maybe they are laying down a foundation for this whole thing. Michael Paksima Is there a way to Up-vote this multiple times? 😀 Adrian Edmondson Mucho excited for this . Now the wait to find out who will take the cowl from Bale . Joseph Guest Evans Hmm, don’t understand all the negative feelings here. I, for one, think this news is pretty cool. It really has been a long time, you know, to go without them meeting up in a single movie. Of course more solo movies would be better, but Superman+Batman is better than just Superman, after all, so it’s not like they are losing anything. If it is executed well, then good on them. pud333 Okay, I am going to preface everything I say here with this: I am excited to see Superman and Batman on the same screen. I really am. As comic book fans, we have seen an embarrassment of riches these past ten years in terms of quality, between what Marvel has to offer and what DC has offered on film. Seeing Superman and BAtman, my two favourite heroes together on screen, will be orgasmic. My point here is, I am not happy with the timing of the teamup, since I preferred a standalone MoS sequel, but I understand why WB is doing what they’re doing. It is clear WB is anxious to get this all going, but it is also clear that they are taking the least risky way of going about it. It’s how WB has always been with their DC characters, and it really shouldn’t surprise us. When you look at their animated properties, it is all Superman or Batman, and when you look at their movies, it is the same. Fine. I get it. This smells of WB interference to me. Snyder and Goyer have always stated they wanted another movie to establish Superman first, but all of a sudden, we’re getting what is essentially a World’s Finest movie. This feels like the WB execs made a top-down decision to just go with a WF movie. Fine. I get it. I just hope we don’t end up with a stinker like IM2 or an abomination that was Spider-man 3. In MoS 2, I felt they would have to establish Clark Kent the reporter, but if Lex is going to be in it, maybe Metallo, and now a new Batman… I just hope they can make it work. That’s a LOT of story to cover. Let alone trying to fit in the action. That said… BRING IT ON! I hope this new Batman is a more prepared Batman, a more omnipotent Batman – Basically, I am hoping for a Grant Morrison Bat-God, just like how he was in the JLA books Morrison wrote. I want a Batman that is nimble, acrobatic, and scary as all hell, just like he was in the Rock of Ages storyline. I want this Batman to have all sorts of futuristic gadgets. Since MoS went more sci fi, I am expecting a more sci-fi Batman. pud333 Okay, enough with the complaining (including from me!) Let’s talk about who will play Batman. When you guys inevitably do the podcast on this topic, please talk about who you want to play Batman. I wonder if Armie Hammer still has a shot at playing Batman now that Lone Ranger was such a flop? Michael Paksima Yes. It’s strange that during the brief JL:Mortal era, I (and, it seemed, most) was completely against the very idea of this Armie Hammer guy playing my beloved Bruce/Batman, but now he is the only possible choice IMO. Uh-oh, as I typed that, I realized that I don’t buy Armie as the experience, prime, Bat-god. Dammit. pud333 Yeah, I have the same problem. On one hand, he seems perfect. On the other, he doesn’t, since I want Bat-God. I dunno. I am re-reading the New 52 Justice League arc with Darkseid. He’s handled pretty decently there, so maybe that would work. Kaare Kvenild I think my head is going to explode! This is so awesome! If he wasn’t too old I’d love to see Timothy Olephant (spelling?) play Batman, oh well. This smells of nothing but awesome! stock I agree about Olyphant, a dream casting kind of like when I dreamed Clint Eastwood would play him in a film version of TDKR. Olyphant could still pull it off IMO. Alex I think I would have prefered a solo Superman sequel. But it will be interesting to see how this all plays out. You can definitely smell Justice League in the air. Adrian Unless they rush this for a 2015 release and it doesn’t meet expectations. If that happens, WB/DC will go back to being reactive instead of proactive. oliver_chang Screen ranters are more pumped for Sup/Bat team up than TA2, News sites are reporting DC team up and Hunger games rather than TA2, most people would be more excited for Sup/BT cuz they know these 2, as for Ultron? Who is he? Adrian Yeah, I saw that while browsing Screen Rant. It’s big news but I credit that more to the characters involved than anything else. WB/DC had to announce SOMETHING. As a film, I have much more faith in Marvel right now than I do in WB/DC. And I can honestly say that Iron Man 3 was meh. It seems to me like WB/DC is pushing this on Snyder, Goyer, and Cavill. In so many interviews, they all talked about developing Superman more first. oliver_chang Yes the characters, spidey did great numbers overseas simply because of the brand rather than the actors, most average moviegoers probably thought it was spiderman 4. I actually liked IM3, but yes RDJ is way bigger than IM, moreso than Bale>Batman, so characters are enough to make an impact. I agree it feels like they are pushed into doing it, remember WB trying to get Bale to play a different Batman? They are probably still trying hard now. They are now officially moving to this project with or without Bale matt Too Soon For A Batman Reboot: Anyone else feel this way? I am not just speaking as a person who loved the TDK Trilogy. I mean, the story just ended a year ago. With a release in 2 years, I just can’t fathom another actor portraying Batman. I think WB is moving to fast. I truly hope the only reason there is no continuity between Nolan’s Batman and Man of Steel is because Nolan didn’t want it or they couldn’t put the two together. For me, the latter was the reason I didn’t want the TDK Trilogy involved. Besides the awful quality of the Schumacher films, following the Burton films, the flip flop of actors in the cape gave zero sense of continuity. I hope I am wrong. I hope they can pull it off… Marie even though i’m a supporter to see batman & superman on film together at some point, i do feel this is too fast for batman on screen. i would’ve preferred for a direct sequel to mos focusing on clark/superman in metropolis, lex luthor intro and such. we just ended the dk trilogy almost a year exactly & now, he’ll appear again within less than 2 years. i thought returning spiderman on screen was fast. i’m hoping for the best, but it does feel rushed. stock If they do go for a TDKR vibe, which they hinted at with somebody reading directly from it at ComicCon, it won’t work. The only reason that that particular story does work is because the characters have a history together, where here, obviously, they don’t. I think Cavill and Superman are strong enough for at least 1 solo sequel. This seems desperate to me. Gregory Walsh Give us the proper MoS sequel first. Seems WB is following Marvels plan perfectly. launch a successful property (Iron Man) then force its sequel to be spread too thin to set up the team up movie. I REALLY REALLY want to see B/S. But you made an awesome Superman movie. You made me care about superman again. So lets see him on screen in a proper sequel and then lets see him meet Batman after that. MoS2 summer 2015. Flash winter 2015. B/S summer 2016. WW winter 2016. JL summer 2017 Brady1138 I had a really long and thought-out comment on here respectfully disagreeing with the hosts in saying this wasn’t a rush job that actually got Man of Steel 2 cancelled…but Disqus sacrificed it to the Sun-God from Smallville, apparently.
