Avengers Marvel Casts James Spader As Ultron In Joss Whedon’s AVENGERS Sequel! written by John Bierly August 29, 2013 BOOM! Big news just dropped from Marvel that James Spader will portray the titular villain in AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON. The press release via Marvel: EXCLUSIVE: AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON Casts James Spader as the Film’s Legendary Villain The Emmy® Award-winning actor set to play Ultron in the 2015 blockbuster! James Spader will face off against Earth’s Mightiest Heroes as the villain in Marvel’s AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON, the sequel to 2012’s record-breaking MARVEL’S THE AVENGERS. The Emmy Award-winning actor will play Ultron in the Avengers’ much anticipated return to the big screen from writer/director Joss Whedon. The film comes to theaters on May 1, 2015. Spader earned three Emmy Awards for his role as Alan Shore on BOSTON LEGAL and THE PRACTICE, and will return to television this fall in NBC’s highly anticipated series THE BLACKLIST. Most recently Spader was seen in the critically-acclaimed film LINCOLN directed by Steven Spielberg and has previously worked with a long list of accomplished film directors including David Cronenberg, Curtis Hansen, Sidney Lumet, Mike Nichols, Tim Robbins, Robert Rodriguez, Steven Soderbergh, and Oliver Stone. David Mamet also directed Spader in the Broadway play RACE. AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON will bring the Marvel Universe’s biggest heroes together again to face one of their biggest villains, with MARVEL’S THE AVENGERS director Joss Whedon returning to write and direct the sequel. MARVEL’S THE AVENGERS was released in 2012 and went on to earn $1.5 billion worldwide, making it the third-largest grossing movie of all time. Spader is represented by ICM Partners and his lawyer Melanie Cook at Ziffren Brittenham. What do you think? Another excellent example of Marvel going outside of the box and finding casting that’s truly unexpected and inspired. (Wouldn’t it be nice if this happened more often? No silly rumors, no speculation, just BOOM, no wondering, no worrying, here’s your casting. It’s so refreshing.) UPDATE Loki approves: Go on, James Spader. Go get 'em. @Avengers #AgeOfUltron — Tom Hiddleston (@twhiddleston) August 29, 2013 Marvel Casts James Spader As Ultron In Joss Whedon’s AVENGERS Sequel! was last modified: February 21st, 2016 by John Bierly Related Avengers: Age of Ultron 9 comments 0 Facebook Twitter Google + Pinterest John Bierly previous post Michigan Film Office Welcomes Superman And Batman To The Motor City next post Official: Bradley Cooper Is Rocket Raccoon In GOTG You may also like Renner Discusses Hawkeye’s AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON... February 28, 2015 Adrian Edmondson So is it just the voice or actual motion capture also ? John Bierly Not sure yet, Adrian! All the info we have is in the press release, and it doesn’t clarify. We’ll update the story as new details happen! Naes Terrible decision! He’s not made of metal. He’s not a robot in real life… maybe a cyborg though. He doesn’t have the ghastly skull-like appearance of the comic book Ultron. What is Marvel thinking?! Fail. But seriously. Cool I guess. How can anyone judge if this is a good or bad move? James Spader is a fine actor. “Inspired” might be superlative. I guess most of it depends on the script which there’s no reason to doubt that with Wheedon at the helm. stock Great, now even Ultron is being played by a middle aged fat man. I should be thrilled that I’m being represented in super-hero world, but…come on, what is this? Old folks day? I thought Ultron had more of a angry child persona. Are they rushed to cast this role? Sean Gerber I don’t think there’s any rush for a role that will be voice and motion capture only. Spader sounds very much like a Whedon choice. My guess is that Joss got his man. stock Are you guys kidding me? James Spader usually sounds like he’s half asleep. And that will happen after your second round of lasagna and a couple beers. It worked great for his half asleep politico in Lincoln, cuz that guy was always eating and drinking, but as the major villain for the new Avengers movie, well….inspired is one word I guess. But I know, its just like, my opinion, dudes. Again, I don’t question his acting chops. He’s a good actor. Its his drive, his lack of hunger, cuz face it, he ain’t hungry. These new hires, they don’t need these jobs. That’s what I don’t understand. I want somebody who needs a job. Not somebody who walks in with a sweater tied around his neck. Michael Lalaian I certainly approve of Spader’s inspired casting, but personally I hope its just voice work. Whedon accomplished something great with Hiddleston as Loki, presenting him as a complex and layered “human” villain. Now, I’d like to see him try that with a full CGI creation, something that hasn’t really be done since Gollum. I think Whedon’s up to the task. zack Im sure its all voice and CGI.i dont beleive Rip is going to take on earths mightiest. lol Charlie As far as I’m concerned he can’t be Ultron until he finishes “Step 9” and apologizes to George Costanza…..
