AMC has revealed plans for a spinoff series to The WALKING DEAD. Series creator Robert Kirkman will serve as an executive producer, as will current show producers Gale Anne Hurd and David Alpert. The series is currently scheduled for a 2015 debut.
As a huge fan of both THE WALKING DEAD’s comic and television forms, this news definitely piques my interest. I do, however have some reservations, as the comic’s current storyline has begun to drag out longer than necessary (though I’m hoping the upcoming “War” arc returns the series to some of its former glory). I can’t help but think that Kirkman and company should improve the quality of their current product before stretching it out even more than it already is.
There’s also the danger of oversaturation. Zombies are big business right now, and despite Kirkman’s statements of racing creativity, this spinoff would (presumably) still be bound by the rules of The WALKING DEAD. That means the same brand of George Romero inspired zombies, just with a different set of protagonists. How different can it really be?
Despite my concerns, I’m genuinely interested to see what direction this new show takes. It’s either going to be really, really good, or really, really bad, methinks. We’ll see in 2015, during what continues to shape up as the biggest year genre entertainment has ever seen.
