J.A.R.V.I.S. Has A Vision For AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON!

Paul Bettany

Paul Bettany, a Marvel Cinematic Universe veteran who’s been Tony Stark’s disembodied best friend, J.A.R.V.I.S., in three IRON MAN films and THE AVENGERS, will finally have a physical form to go along with his artificial intelligence. Per Variety and the Daily Mail, Bettany will play android villain turned superhero the Vision in AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON.  This casting news calls into question which came first, the Ultron or the Vision?

In the comics Ultron created Vision to battle The Avengers before the android turned on its creator and helped the heroes. In the MCU, J.A.R.V.I.S. is already the biggest name in artificial intelligence before Ultron even appears, unless director Joss Whedon does some retconning. Since the voice of J.A.R.V.I.S., Bettany, is now playing Vision, it stands to reason that he could appear as a precursor to Ultron, or Ultron could wind up corrupting J.A.R.V.I.S. at some point in the film with a synthesized body being part of a cool perk package.

In any event, we are continuing to see the hand Stark technology will play in the film now that Hank Pym will likely not be Ultron’s cinematic creator as he was in the comics. If Ultron can somehow be perceived as Tony Stark’s fault, the team dynamic is sure be thrown off balance. Stark was not exactly Steve Rogers’ favorite person in the first film, so it will be interesting to see how Captain America deals with Iron Man being a possible source of a new threat to the entire world. There’s going to be some tension aboard the Helicarrier.

I’m sure a thousand fans are thinking this, but there goes the “Coulson as Vision” rumor… :)

As much as I wish Marvel had the rights to Spider-Man and X-Men back, things like this remind me of the unexpected benefits of them being off the table. While we may have gotten to The Avengers eventually, Marvel Studios would have felt compelled to prioritize those other two franchises first, delaying something like this. My “Big Nine” Avengers lineup appearing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is nearly complete now, and all it would take to complete is the announcement that The Wasp will be in Ant-Man.

Good casting choice, but who’s all in the film now? Presumably Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Hulk, Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver, Vision, Ultron, Black Widow, Von Strucker, and various S.H.I.E.L.D. folks. Considering that there’s presumably going to be a few origins doled out, Ultron’s and Vision’s anyways, I’m expecting something pushing 3 hours. Even then, it’s going to be a real feat to juggle all those characters effectively.
