MMM Podcast #162: CAPTAIN AMERICA & SPIDER-MAN Trailer Reactions

As the “Big Game” evolved into a big blowout, two very big superhero movie trailers were unleashed. The Gentlemen offer their analysis of trailer #2 for CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER and the “Enemies Unite” sizzle for THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2. One film looks like its studio’s best effort. The other is starting to look a little thin.

Captain America: First Avenger is still my favorite Phase 1 film. I can’t wait for Winter Soldier. Its release into the world of Edward Snowden / NSA / drones is well-timed.

I think it’s a trifle premature to be calling out TDK comparisons. In particular, since I don’t think anyone is going to be confusing Sebastian Stan with Heath Ledger any time soon.

    • Adrian

I don’t believe they were making the comparison on an acting or ensemble level. I think it’s more to do with the tone and such.

      • Robert Reineke

Sure, but part of making the tone and themes work is going to be based on the performances. There’s a lot to like in the trailers to date, but they largely have not focused on the performances. The emotional core has to work and that’s going to largely depend on the acting. Which I’m sure will be, at least, competent, but I think you really need a special performance somewhere in the film, from Stan or Evans, to truly make those comparisons to TDK.

In any event, I think there’s such a thing as over-hype.

I didn’t come away from the ASM2 trailer feeling as concerned as you guys seem to have, even though I was the one to point out Nigma similarities. This may be the most “marvel cinematic universe”-feeling spidey flick yet, which would incidentally also make it my favorite. I feel like the original three hit that Batman Forever vibe, ASM1 tried for Nolan as was quite obvious… my hope is that this one gets that Iron Man 1 tone of appropriate levels of funniness and seriousness right.

Also, where are the SHIELD podcasts? Last night’s episode in particular was very interesting, especially with the non-linear back and forth style story telling. Not to mention all the cool spoilerish stuff I won’t post here.

looking forward to Marvel getting more serious and allegorical in tone with Captain America The Winter Soldier.
