Movies MAD MAX: FURY ROAD Makes a First Impression written by Robert Reineke June 26, 2014 The long gestating MAD MAX: FURY ROAD finally is letting itself out to the world, perhaps with an unveiling planned for ComicCon, and has unveiled a brand new set of images courtesy of Entertainment Weekly. A set of images that’s like going back in time to see grit, dirt, real tricked out cars, a manly lead, extreme character designs, and no doubt some insane stunts and driving. You can view the gallery here. It doesn’t look like a re-imagining, as much as it just looks like another Mad Max film, this time starring Tom Hardy instead of Mel Gibson. Perhaps because it’s still George Miller’s franchise. And it looks like it just jumps into that world again instead of a reboot. THE ROAD WARRIOR evokes “a stranger wanders into town” tropes and having Mad Max wander into another post-apocalyptic situation is a natural fit and bypasses the need for an origin rehash. The early images also make the film look suitably large with an array of vehicles and a sense that there’s going to be a lot of action. There’s no obligatory shot of two characters standing around in a room talking, but they appear to be always doing things. In fact, word on the street is the movie is one long chase scene. If that proves to be the case for the movie, this could be a real treat. MAD MAX: FURY ROAD opens May 15, 2015. Sound off below on your first impression. Nobody’s more ready for this shit than me!! stock The original Max trilogy made Mel Gibson. The first one was just plain brutal, Road Warrior got more audience friendly with the Gyro Captain and the Feral Kid, and Thunderdome was totally silly with Tina “WHAT’S THIS?!!!” Turner. But they were all entertaining. I think Hardy is a good fit for Max, but with the pariah status of oil and gasoline in Hollywood these days, what’s the impetus for the action? Mel drove around scavenging for gasoline, because it was the number one commodity post Apocalypse. Is it still kosher for a hero to rob, steal, fight……for oil? And why can’t Hardy be “Son of Max?” I’d love to see Gibson show up, much like Garner did for Maverick.
