Movies Open Forum: FRANK MILLER’S SIN CITY: A DAME TO KILL FOR written by Robert Reineke August 25, 2014 Judging from the box office, not many people saw FRANK MILLER’S SIN CITY: A DAME TO KILL FOR. But, I’m sure some readers did go. So what did you think? Deserved or underserved failure? What are the highlights? What are the lowlights? Enquiring minds want to know. Certainly there are a number of angles to discuss. Eva Green seems to be getting good notices. Was it just too long between installments? Has mainstream tastes in visual style moved on, despite the relative success of 300 2? All of the above? Or is it just not that good? It’s probably a good place to speculate on Robert Rodriguez’s future as an independent filmmaker too. It’s been a long time since he’s had a critical and financial hit. What would you recommend for him? October 1, 2013 texvor with the obvious exception of this site…I think this film was the victim of Marvel comic book zealots that happen to be passing off as movie reviewers who only think that comic book films can only be about superheroes or specifically marvel superheroes. The nonsense spread about this film before it even got to release just horendous. The same thing happened with TMNT as well and that wasn’t bad. I was expecting little from that film and it was actually ok. This Sin City film is far from perfect but it has two strong storylines and Eva Green is obvious the stand out but so is Gordon Levitt who continues to impress. Powers Booth,Brolin,Rouke,Dawson gave good performances but they kinda understated it, good enough to beleive their characters but not overthrowing the obvious stars of the film which was Gren and Levit since the focus was on their characters. But a film like this works because the ensemble cast are good in their parts for others to shine. The difference is that the first film was stronger in its storyline, how it tied together and more of the characters had their moment which doesn’t happen much in this film. Maybe the direction and the way the film was put together may have been a fault, the film needed a cohesive narrative like the first film than the only they went with. There’s been tons of films who had sequels really late after the original film was released so i don’t think Sin City 2 lack of sucess can be attributed to that since it didn’t really affect other films that followed a similar pattern. I think lack of marketing or proper marketing from the studio and stupid fanboy negative buzz is what helped kill this movie. As for Rodrguez, since Grindhouse he’s been stuck in a B movie mentality, making films he shouldn’t have or not progressing the material of films he’s given(PREDATORS). Don’t think its the end of his career in hollywood though,he just needs a project he could let rip and be passionate about. Too bad DC isn’t doing small budget movies because he’d be a contender for a Suicide Squad style film or Sgt Rock.
