April 5, 2016 MUPPETS MOST WANTED Review March 20, 2014 Michael Lalaian I have to say, I wasn’t expecting to be so moved by this trailer. It makes a very good case for why we need to reassess what a “Tomorrowland” really consists of. Following the (supposed) defeat of fascism in WWII, the 50’s and 60’s view of “tomorrow” was flying cars, modern conveniences and space exploration. Disney perfectly captured this zeitgeist with the aesthetic and attractions of the “Tomorrowland” area of Disneyland. But the view of “tomorrow” has changed drastically since then. We have had several genocides since the Holocaust, democratic governments have been revealed to be corrupt, and rather than flying cars, tomorrow seems to increasingly consist of food scarcity, limited resources, overpopulation and dogmatic fanaticism. I don’t know how deeply Brad Bird will be allowed to delve into these topics, but the film does seem to be taking a serious, and honest, look at what “tomorrow” really is for modern day people. I just hope it delivers on that potential.
