Television AMC Orders a Pilot for PREACHER written by Robert Reineke December 4, 2014 AMC, which is riding high based on their adaptation of THE WALKING DEAD, looks to be mining the comic book well again by ordering a pilot of PREACHER. Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg are attached to the project, so it promises to be edgy and funny, like the source material. (Courtesy of Deadline.) This strikes me as a good fit with AMC. PREACHER isn’t a copy of THE WALKING DEAD, BREAKING BAD, or MAD MEN, but it’s adult, edgy, and dark and sure to rile some folks. It has big ideas, but is not outlandishly scaled for television. And it’s decidedly unsuited for network television. I certainly see the attraction for AMC. Of course, going to pilot does not mean going to series, although with Rogen and company attached the odds are good for it. Still, you actually have to make a compelling pilot and find a charismatic cast with chemistry to justify the show. There’s still a long ways to go here. This would be a plus for reviving interest in DC’s Vertigo line if PREACHER becomes a series. And I think it’s a good thing if it helps revive interest in non-superhero titles in the marketplace. Movies and television are one thing, but do we really need over 100 superhero titles a month from the Big Two? February 26, 2017 Dennis Ramirez Interesting. Do you think the story’s anti-religious nature could keep it from catching on as well as other AMC shows? If I recall correctly, the comic series painted God in a decidedly negative light, a concept which might not sit well with some viewers. I don’t know how significantly people of faith drive ratings. Do you have any idea? Robert Reineke It’s certainly possible that religious controversy could hold Preacher back in the ratings. Certainly America is conservative in that respect. Then again it’s not like you can picket every television and the PR might be good.
