Movies Open Forum: JUPITER ASCENDING written by Robert Reineke February 5, 2015 The Wachowskis have yet to recapture the magic of THE MATRIX, although I think they’ve been making interesting, ambitious films since then even if their reach has exceeded their grasp. JUPITER ASCENDING might be their folly though. That said, sometimes follies are a lot more interesting to discuss and say a lot more about filmmakers in the long run than successes. And sometimes follies get reevaluated with time. In any event, I expect that there are points of interest even if the current Rotten Tomatoes score proves to be accurate. At the very least, there’s the promise of some impressive special effects, costuming, and art direction. And the Wachowskis usually have at least one impressive set piece in their movies. And it is a big action film with a female as a central character which certainly is part of the current trend in Hollywood. Or it could be the end of the Wachowskis as big budget filmmakers for the present. Whatever the outcome, it’s a notable film due to the filmmakers and the size of the budget. Sean’s review didn’t give much hope though, especially in regards to the script. As far as I’m concerned anymore, I could give a damn about the FX, if the script sucks, I’ll suffer it on DVD. Maybe. Just like I did ASM. A whole lot easier to hit the stop button than leave a theater for me. I hate admitting I’ve been suckered in public.
