Pixar Disney/Pixar’s THE GOOD DINOSAUR Is Inspired By A Disney Classic written by Sean Gerber August 17, 2015 While introducing his film alongside producer Denise Ream at last weekend’s D23 EXPO, director Peter Sohn shared the touching story of how Disney inspired him to be an animator and rely on visuals to tell a story. Growing up, Sohn was frequently taken to the movies by his mother, who only spoke Korean and didn’t understand a thing that was being said on screen. She could not connect with the feature films her son adored, until DUMBO. The scene in which Dumbo’s caged mother extends her trunk through the bars to cradle her calf moved both Peter and his mother to tears. Without a single word spoken, a connection was formed between the two viewers and the story they were watching. To Peter, this was proof of the power of animation and he is ready to provide his own demonstration in Disney/Pixar’s THE GOOD DINOSAUR. (Disney/Image Group LA)DENISE REAM, PETER SOHN In the footage shown, it was easy to see just how technologically advanced Pixar’s next offering will be. The photorealistic landscapes are breathtaking and easy to confuse with the vibrant, live-action nature shots used to sell 4K television sets in retail stores. The very real look of the environments clashes with the very cartoonish designs of the characters at times, but it’s not the polish that makes THE GOOD DINOSAUR a potential victory in visual storytelling for Sohn. Among the clips played was a scene similar to that tear-jerker from DUMBO. Arlo, our apatosaurus protagonist, and his new pal Spot, a brave but wild cave boy, have no common language with which to communicate. They are still able to share their respective stories of sadness and loss, however, through the use of sticks and sand. The scene closes with the two friends coming together to howl their grief at the moon. THE GOOD DINOSAUR doesn’t seem to have all the humor and high concept that made Pixar’s INSIDE OUT a smash hit earlier this year, but that’s okay. It needs to be different and if it can separate itself through its technological prowess while keeping the story grounded in raw, genuine emotions like the ones shown in the Arlo/Spot clip, Peter Sohn will succeed in paying forward the moment he and his mother enjoyed through an elephant that could fly.
