Movies Watch Two Clips From BRIDGE OF SPIES written by Sean Gerber September 25, 2015 Dreamworks Pictures has released the first two clips from BRIDGE OF SPIES, the upcoming Cold War thriller directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Tom Hanks. I know, they had me at Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks, too. BRIDGE OF SPIES tells the story of James Donovan (Hanks), an insurance attorney hired to defend Rudolf Abel (Mark Rylance) after Abel is arrested as a Soviet agent living in 1950s New York. As we can see in the clips, the stakes here are fundamental principles weighed against American safety. These themes ring as true today as they did 60 years ago. Hanks does a great job of spelling them out as he considers both internal and external perceptions of his patriotism while upholding a person’s right to be properly defended against pending accusations in court (see: the Fifth and Sixth Amendments of the United States Constitution.) BRIDGE OF SPIES has been tossed into the Best Picture race by most Oscar pundits already and these clips are backing up those high expectations. The film will be released on October 16. June 25, 2014 STRANGE MAGIC Review January 23, 2015 stock Interesting inclusion to the site considering this is not a myth. Spielberg and Hanks were both very important advocates for bringing the history of WWII to both the large and small screens. IMO they did it very well, despite Spielberg’s penchant for over-sentimentalizing American life. But here, with this subject: Communist infiltration of the Govt. and media, (and I’m not yet sure where this focuses) the waters can get murky. I know basically where their political sympathies lie, but they are such committed and able story-tellers that it will be interesting to see how the film plays out.
