Walt Disney Studios Disney Releases BEAUTY AND THE BEAST Teaser written by Sean Gerber May 23, 2016 Walt Disney Studios has released a teaser for Beauty and the Beast, a live-action retelling of the studio’s classic animated adaptation. The footage may be brief, but what we can already see looks like a gorgeous combination of production design and visual effects. Director Bill Condon and his team are staying true to the majesty that made Disney’s 1991 animated film a Best Picture Oscar nominee, back when only five films could get that honor. There is no sign of the Beast (Dan Stevens) beyond a faint roar and some claw marks, but we do see Emma Watson as Belle at the very end. While we do not see any of the supporting cast, we can hear Ewan McGregor as Lumiere and McKellen as Cogsworth. They are part of an all-star cast that also includes Luke Evans as Gaston, Kevin Kline as Maurice, Josh Gad as Lefou, Stanley Tucci as Maestro Cadenza, and two-time Oscar winner Emma Thompson as Mrs. Potts. Disney has had great success in reimagining its animated classics in live-action. Alice in Wonderland brought in over a billion dollars worldwide in 2010 while The Jungle Book has been a critical and box office darling this year. There are plans for many more live-action re-tellings in the coming years, but Beauty and the Beast, along with the inevitable The Lion King, is one of the true main events. With that incredible cast and one of Disney Animation’s greatest achievements as its source of inspiration, audiences hoping for something just as special as what they saw in 1991 may get their wish. Disney’s Beauty and the Beast will be in theaters March 17, 2017. Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast” is a live-action re-telling of the studio’s animated classic which refashions the classic characters from the tale as old as time for a contemporary audience, staying true to the original music while updating the score with several new songs. “Beauty and the Beast” is the fantastic journey of Belle, a bright, beautiful and independent young woman who is taken prisoner by a beast in his castle. Despite her fears, she befriends the castle’s enchanted staff and learns to look beyond the Beast’s hideous exterior and realize the kind heart and soul of the true Prince within. The film stars: Emma Watson as Belle; Dan Stevens as the Beast; Luke Evans as Gaston, the handsome, but shallow villager who woos Belle; Oscar® winner Kevin Kline as Maurice, Belle’s eccentric, but lovable father; Josh Gad as Lefou, Gaston’s long-suffering aide-de-camp; Golden Globe® nominee Ewan McGregor as Lumiere, the candelabra; Oscar nominee Stanley Tucci as Maestro Cadenza, the harpsichord; Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Plumette, the feather duster; six-time Tony Award® winner Audra McDonald as Madame Garderobe, the wardrobe; Oscar nominee Ian McKellen as Cogsworth, the mantel clock; and two-time Academy Award® winner Emma Thompson as the teapot, Mrs. Potts. Directed by Oscar® winner Bill Condon from a screenplay by TBD based on the 1991 animated film, the film is produced by Mandeville Films’ David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman with eight-time Oscar-winning composer Alan Menken, who won two Academy Awards® (Best Original Score and Best Song) for the 1991 animated film, providing the score, which will include new recordings of the original songs written by Menken and Howard Ashman, as well as several new songs written by Menken and three-time Oscar winner Tim Rice. “Beauty and the Beast” will be released in U.S. theaters on March 17, 2017. And it’s not like there haven’t been a ton of variations on the story. But good for someone using Dan Stevens. I expect there will be nods to Cocteau’s classic. Michael Bradley Reminds me a lot of the Cinderella teaser. (although that one showed even less) Disney is batting nearly a 1000 with their live action adaptions, so I will be front row center for this one!
