DC Films Margot Robbie Just Got Harley Quinn And Other DC Women Their Own Movie! written by Sean Gerber May 16, 2016 Harley Quinn is going to be the breakout star of blockbuster movies this year, having already stolen a pair of Suicide Squad trailers that include plenty of Deadshot (Will Smith) and The Joker (Jared Leto.) This is actually a bit of a pattern for Harley Quinn, as the character forced her way past what was supposed to be a one-off appearance in Batman: The Animated Series and into DC Comics continuity where she’s become one of the publisher’s most popular characters. Margot Robbie, the actress playing Harley in Suicide Squad, is continuing that legacy in one of the coolest behind-the-scenes stories in the history of comic book movies. Since landing the role, Robbie has fallen in love with her character. While poring over stacks of DC Comics to research the role, Robbie also became very fond of several more female characters in DC’s lineup. According to The Hollywood Reporter, she felt so strongly about the characters that she brought in an unnamed female writer to develop a film led by DC’s female heroes and villains. Together, Robbie and the unnamed writer took the project to Warner Bros. and the studio has agreed to continue developing the film with Robbie attached to star and produce. Harley Quinn will obviously appear, but no other character inclusions are known for sure. Batgirl and the Birds of Prey are among the names popping up in the rumor mill. If you’ve been following Arrow this season, you know that one prominent member of the Birds of Prey, Black Canary, was recently removed from DC’s television universe. Perhaps that character is now reserved for the movies. Also, whenever Harley Quinn breaks away from The Joker and other male DC villains, a team-up with Poison Ivy often follows. The lineup, however, is news for another day. All that matters now is that if (more likely when) this movie happens, it’s going to include a lot of characters that have never appeared in movies before and some of those characters might never have had a shot at the silver screen without this project. Also, not enough can be said to commend Margot Robbie on taking it upon herself to develop this project and will it into existence. Hopefully Warner Bros. makes it official and adds this film to the DC Extended Universe slate very soon. Harley Quinn will make her own cinematic debut in Suicide Squad on August 5.
