I was kind of surprised that Paul mentioned the Marvel Knights Punisher run by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon as a potential go to source for the upcoming Punisher series. Don’t get me wrong, that run is a lot of fun but it has a lot of tongue in cheek humor, especially on ‘Welcome back Frank’, that would be difficult to do with the very serious gritty version Jon Bernthal so brilliantly portrayed in Daredevil season 2. I would say that the ideal go to comic book source would be Garth Ennis’s Punisher Max run that went on for 60 odd issues in the mid 2000’s. It is very deep and really looks at the psychology of Frank Castle and his one man war on crime. Standout story arcs from the Max run that would absolutely work as a story basis for the upcoming series are ‘The Slavers’, where Frank faces for the first time an Eastern European human trafficking ring operating in New York and has to help a girl who has escaped form them, ‘In The Beginning’, where rogue CIA agents try to convince Frank to work for them taking down corrupt governments and dictators across the world, it features the return of an important figure in Frank’s past. ‘Kitchen Irish’, where Frank tries to take down an IRA cell operating in New York responsible for bombings in the area. Also ‘Up is Down, Black Is White’, whereby the Italian mob try to lure Frank out into the open by getting personal with the tragedy that birthed the Punisher, finally, ‘Valley Forge’, where Franks history in the military comes back to him, this particular storyline would work perfectly with what went on in Daredevil season 2. So much good Punisher stuff out there. Also, check out the Greg Rucka run couple of years ago, that is great as well.
