Fist off I love this site. But judging from the early podcast’s that I’m listening to for the first time the MMM crew is much more critical of Marvel properties than WB/DC properties. Hearing the crew, that I enjoy listening to, squirm around the issue of Green Lanterns quality was off putting.

    • http://www.modernmythmedia.com Sean Gerber

I don’t think there was any “squirming,” as we acknowledged the widely held perception of the film while pointing out why some of us didn’t necessarily share that perception. In later episodes, we refer to the film as a failure since it was, regardless of how we each personally feel about the movie.

Also, I think we’ve been VERY critical of WB/DC over the history of the show.

    • Rob Ó Conchúir

I don’t entirely agree with you, but I do find it a little odd that they go into SO much detail about how First Class had lots of little continuity problems and yet they never really seem to take issue with Dark Knight Rises’ oft-criticised plotholes, which MASSES of people (comic fanboys and general moviegoers) seem to constantly talk about.

I say this as someone who LOVES Rises and defends it constantly.

      • http://www.modernmythmedia.com/ Sean Gerber

Between numerous MMM and BOF podcasts about the film and my recent appearance on the Holy Batcast, we indeed have addressed the common criticisms of TDKR including plot holes that aren’t really plot holes. I even took on a list of the most popular criticisms of the film in an article for What Culture: http://whatculture.com/film/10-questionable-criticisms-of-the-dark-knight-rises.php

      • Rob Ó Conchúir

Yeah, thanks, I’ve listened to all of those and I read that at the time – I just find it odd that you find so many small problems in FC to affect your enjoyment of the film, but yet the dozens of irksome details in TDKR don’t phase any of you. Obviously TDKR is a far better film and I don’t begrudge you for liking it more – it’s just something I noticed.

      • http://www.modernmythmedia.com/ Sean Gerber

Odd or not, the podcasts you listened to and the article you read provide clear, detailed accounts as to why I don’t find the most commonly criticized elements of the film irksome at all and consider the validity of several of those criticisms to be questionable at best. There are not “dozens” of things that irk me in TDKR, but that’s no more odd than any disagreement over the same film by two different viewers, you being the second in this scenario.

Outside of the elements specifically called out in podcasts and the article, I’d love to know which details you find particularly irksome. Then I can either agree with you, or explain why I do not share your opinion.

But that’s just me. There are plenty of things in TDKR that bother John Bierly. He’s made that very clear multiple times on the show, so to say none of us are phased by what we see as flaws in TDKR is inaccurate.

Finally your point about TDKR being a “far better film” than FC is an important one. There are a few small things that irk me in TDKR just as there were a few annoying moments in TDK and BB. But when a film is really and truly great, as I consider each film in the trilogy to be, it is very easy to quickly forgive and forget its minor flaws. It’s not so easy to do that when a film is less than great and the flaws pile up, including flaws that are more than minor.

Personally, I don’t find this to be unreasonable, as it happens in evaluations of more than just films. If there was a man who accomplished great things in his life while taking wonderful care of his family and donating as much of his time and money as he could to charity work, would you be phased by the way he smacks his chewing gun or an annoying laugh if those really were the worst of his flaws?

  • Josh Costella

Then you must not have heard nearly every show in recent memory where we are constantly giving Marvel praise and DC/WB grief.

  • Matthan

Well then you MUST realize its an opinion. I’m pointing out an observation I had. And yes I have heard every recent show and the majority of your catalog (I live in Japan and walk/train to work) and I just observed a distinct change in tone before and after Avengers regarding DC/Marvel. Even your header has a Marvel vs DC theme. Understand I don’t have feelings of it one way or another at this time, just an observation. On another note I love your podcasts and applaud your group on your initiative and passion. Also since its New Years Day I’ll add my best of 2012, Dark Knight Rises. I’m with you Sean that is my definitive trilogy, and I’m a Marvel guy.

the best sci fi superheroes podcast in the world

the knowledge and great debate of this podcast is as good as it gets. they should change the podcast title to “sci fi film and tv podcast” or “superheroes podcast” because no one searching for these sort of podcasts on the internet or itunes will unfortunately never find this unrivalled podcast

After re listening to the Green Lantern and First Class podcasts , the misses and I decided to give them another try and I’m glad we did . GL could have been more and though I feel Ryan Reynolds would make a better Flash , he did the best he could with what he had to work with . Still wish FC had the actual first class but hoping the DOFP rectifies the gaps . Thanks again for the great job gang and looking forward to the Superman Returns podcast :)

  • Rob Ó Conchúir

Also yeah, this podcast is terrific and listening back on the older episodes is a joy to do every once in a while. Still waiting for that Superman Returns Roundtable/Beatdown.
